I would agree wholeheartedly with your comments. I have always found ex-Services personnel helpful in the extreme when it comes to research. It also works both ways.

very many thanks for your latest submission, that throws a different light on the matter and is the most constructive suggestion so far. Most would argue 'why advertise your illustrious presence on the battlefield'? but I feel that Service protocol demanded it during WWII. Were you a Yeoman of Signals by any chance?

You guys astound me - 40 / 50 / 60 years out of the "Andrew" and not only can you answer questions on flags and where they (should be) flown which I think is great by the way:

The following is an extract from the 1937 Manual of Seamanship Chapter II which gives clear instruction of what to fly and where. With Ramsey being onboard for a short duration and obviously the senior officer afloat his Admirals flag would have dispaced the commissioning pennant as described below and Ikes flag would have been on the starboard yard arm as described earlier.(Ithink)
"A commissioning pennant, or masthead, which a warship flies from its masthead and indicates the commission of the captain of the ship (and thus of the ship itself). The commissioning pennant may be displaced by various rank flags, namely the flags or pennants of Admirals or commodores, and the personal flags of heads of state and members of royal families".
This was still the case when I left the Andrew !!!

There has been good international discussion elsewhere on this topic, and the opinions, though varied, are very interesting. The model of UNDAUNTED will undergo her float-test orrow evening. I will post an image later. Please keep the results of your research coming, I value and appreciate each and every one of them.

I was a stoker on Undaunted 1967 - 1969.
Someone mentioned a Killick stoker Knocker White he was discharged from the mob cos he only had one lung the other being removed in Hong Kong some years previous.Last I saw of him he was working on lighters in Portland harbour. Has anyone heard anything of a Brum Barber or a Taff Hughes from the same period?

According to this piece in Undaunteds history Ike did fly a flag during his passage (to hell with the bullets) not sure if Ramsey had one but if he did it would normally be at the masthead - will continue digging.
“ Flag presented to the Officers and Men of HMS Undaunted by General Eisenhower. During the afternoon of 7th June 1944, HMS Undaunted embarked General Eisenhower, Admiral Ramsay and their staffs, whose ship had grounded. This flag was hoisted at the starboard yarn arm. General Eisenhower signed his name across two of the stars, using an indelible pencil dipped in whiskey.

Jan Kimber has not replied as yet, I remember a Knocker White, played a lot of football and had a set, I seem to remember him enjoying himself when we had a rig run up to Pusser Hill's pub - The Swan, good run.

I thought the name Jan Kimber rang a bell I left Undaunted Sept 1970 (unless he was at Pompey FMG with me). I also remember "Taff" / "Chalky"/ "Knocker" White, another killick Stoker from that time. He was the fresh water tanky for a while, and flooded 9 and 10 messes on more than one occasion. He also left to work in Portland Naval Base. He also lived at Easton, whereas I lived at Weston. Chalky was in bad health the last time that I saw him. But Jan may be able to recall him, or let us know if he is still about.

you know Jan Kimber, killick stoker (tee hee another stoker),71/74 went outside to work in Portland Yard and ended the 3 badge mayor of Weymouth, the boy did well!.

Was Jan Kimber a killick Stoker on the Unwanted c1969ish?

I think I have seen Jan Kimber, he has turned up on TV as the Mayor of Weymouth!, I will send him an email to confirm.

George Haverly will be in Hospital during our reunion in October,he has Liver Cancer, I hope we can all pray for him and his Wife Ann,and hope to see him at our Bristol reunion in 2011. George served in the BIG E 64/66 and was a seaman gunner.

Can any of you guys tell me how R53's flag hoists would have looked when General Eisenhower and Admiral Ramsay were embarked during the D-Day landings? Would both of their flags have been hoisted and if so, exactly where? Many thanks in anticipation.

How was Blackpool, you have found Frank after 41 years,So who is next to Find , I would like to find 3 cooks from the Undaunted, L/cook Augusts, Tall leading cook with a Cod Eye, Charlie Brown, A fat cook If I remember right, And a small leading cook who always Smoked. Any body remember them.
